Protestants who are critical of Catholicism use Church History ...
- to "prove" that the Catholic Church is not the church established by Jesus, and
- to "prove" that the Protestant Reformation restored true Christianity
In doing so, they commonly ...
- misstate the historical facts (what happened)
- misinterpret the historical facts (why it happened)
- ignore the culture of the day (what it means)
- ignore who did what by blaming the church for everything (who did it)
- emphasize the bad and de-emphasize the good (selectivity)
I address a few examples of historical events which Protestants who are critical of Catholicism consider to be the worst.
