History is misused ...

Protestants who are critical of Catholicism use Church History ...

  • to "prove" that the Catholic Church is not the church established by Jesus, and
  • to "prove" that the Protestant Reformation restored true Christianity

In doing so, they commonly ...

  • misstate the historical facts (what happened)
  • misinterpret the historical facts (why it happened)
  • ignore the culture of the day (what it means)
  • ignore who did what by blaming the church for everything (who did it)
  • emphasize the bad and de-emphasize the good (selectivity)
