Summary

In examining the universe and the natural laws we see unmistakable evidence for the personal Creator revealed in the Bible.

Roots of Cosmology   Part one

The Odd Couple   Chapter one

Scientists and theologians are at war about the age of the universe and whether the creation is beyond the scope of science.

Early Historical Roots   Chapter two

Ancient ideas of the universe, the Greek introduction of scientific methodology, philosophical abstractions, church dogma, and atheism versus God the Creator.

Rebirth of Science   Chapter three

Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler, Newton launch the scientific era. The church resists and Ussher declares 4004 B.C. as the Biblical date of creation. Evidence of an old universe causes many scientists to reject the Bible as merely mythology.

Rise of Non-Theism   Chapter four

Kant's model of an infinitely old universe and his denial of the supernatural including God forms the basis for modern cosmology.

Scientists Rediscover God   Chapter five

Einstein's theories of relativity establish that the universe is old and had a beginning and therefore a creator.

Scientific Cosmology   Part two

The Expanding Universe   Chapter six

Einstein introduces a "fudge factor" to avoid the need for a beginning of the universe but abandoned it and accepted "the necessity for a beginning" and "the presence of a superior reasoning power" (his words).

Cosmic Hesitation   Chapter seven

Determining the age of the universe. Eddington's hesitation model that allows an infinite amount of time for life to get started by evolution. Lemaitre proposes that the universe began as a primeval atom with the mass of the universe. In his mind this makes the idea of a beginning not so philosophically repugnant.

Steady State Cosmology   Chapter eight

This model assumes an infinitely old, expanding universe in which new matter is continually generated in the spaces between the receding galaxies. Hoyle's motive was to provide enough time for life to get started by evolution since as he admits 20 billion years is far too short.

Overthrow of Hesitation and Steady State   Chapter nine

Establishing that the universe is about 18 billion years old. Objections such as "tired light" are all refuted. Understanding the "big bang" and the abundant evidence for it.

Oscillating Universe   Chapter ten

To answer the question "what was there before the big bang?" this model avoids the need for a creator but is abandoned.

Transcendence and Quantum Gravity   Chapter eleven

Feeble attempts to remove the need for a creator by speculating about the first fraction of a second after the "big bang."

Design and the Anthropic Principle   Chapter twelve

The laws of nature and parameters of the universe are incredibly "fine-tuned" to allow life on earth. Some conclusions: "the impression of design is overwhelming (Paul Davis)." "Is it possible that . . . we have stumbled upon scientific proof of the existence of a Supreme Being? (George Greenstein)."

Biblical Cosmology   Part three

Biblical Evidence for Long creation Days   Chapter thirteen

A partial list of early biblical scholars who interpreted the creation days of Genesis 1 as longer than 24 hours: Josephus, Irenaeus, Origen, Basil, Augustine, Aquinas. Young earth creationists resist evolution (rightly so) as the explanation for the origin of life but think (wrongly) that an old earth implies evolution. Some ideas they propose: The "appearance of age" theory (that God created trees with annual rings for years that never existed); the idea that the Bible is the "only" authoritative source of truth (rejection of science). A detailed analysis of the Biblical basis for long creation days. Some common creationist evidences for a young universe and young earth are refuted. Modern man (Adam and Eve) dated to about 20,000 years ago.

Genesis Creation Account   Chapter fourteen

A brief chronology of the creation events of Genesis 1 they line-up perfectly with modern science.

The Problem of Suffering and Evil   Chapter fifteen

A Biblical perspective.

The Gospel According to the Creation   Chapter sixteen

That the characteristics of the God of the Bible perfectly match scientific cosmology.

Conclusion of the Matter   Chapter seventeen

Even with scientific evidence for a personal Creator people still refuse to believe.
